In 2023, BTMF expanded with the Little Oak Project.
We've always been a family-focused organization with children at the center of our why, and we are grateful to continue to make a bigger impact than we initially imagined.
The holiday season can be challenging for many as the projection of what a “perfect” family looks like is all around us.
Cancer has a way of really throwing that vision out of sync with reality, and childhood cancer is an entirely elevated level of “can this really be happening?”
It’s even harder when your kid is a spirited 8 year old boy diagnosed with blood cancer.
Today, Logan Smith is 10 years old and continues to go through various types of intense chemotherapy including oral, IV, and spinal. Some of these therapies are done daily.
He is diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma, which is an aggressive type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Recently his chemo dosage was increased, which brings back too-recent memories of him losing his bright red hair, requiring monthly blood transfusions, and an appetite loss. The long term effects are unknown yet also include neuropathy, muscle weakness, lung damage, and bone weakening.
Yet Logie continues to strive forward with a brave face, holding the hands of his two sisters, Hartley (5) and Gracie (19), and joking with his brother, Jaxon (15). His parents, Erin and Brian, are advocating for him nonstop.
Unfortunately earlier this year, Logie’s family’s home was discovered to have hidden mold throughout. Since Logan is undergoing treatment, his immune system is compromised & any exposure to the mold is extremely dangerous. The Smiths had to discard all their porous furniture & belongings as well as move out of their home until necessary, and expensive, renovations can be completed.
Led by a generous donation by Recellerate, BTMF is proud to do something different this year for Giving Tuesday and MATCH* every donation made. BTMF’s Little Oak Project focuses on supporting kids battling cancer and Logie’s story of resilience, hope, faith, and the power of family is one we truly want to help.
Your generosity will make a significant impact in supporting Logie and his family, and reinforce the value of community. Thank you.
Our first year, we partnered with Children's National Hospital and we created a "Christmas in November" experience for children with cancer.
BTMF answered the children's wishlist with wrapped gifts that Santa and Mrs. Claus handed out. The BTMF team even helped put together a new play kitchen! Plus, each child received a Little Oak Project backpack filled with goodies including the Carry Me book by Carson Leslie, kindly donated by the Carson Leslie Foundation.
The children were very joyful about the surprise visit. It was wonderful to see their faces light up and bring new happiness to their world!
Thank you to everyone who purchased Little Oak Project merchandise as that went directly to this cause. In addition, other support from the Big Tree Invitational and general donations are also incredibly important. We wouldn't be able to do this without you!!
